John Bentley Heng is a political animal, a tea lover and a proud Sabahan from Malaysia. He is a water sports enthusiast with questionable diving skills, a film buff who since his young age has been a James Bond aficionado, and an Anglophile due to his exposure to the Bond movies and British spy thrillers.
Born and bred in the town of Tawau, he has left home since 2012 to further his higher education in England. He studied Accounting at the University of Hull and after graduation in 2015, he continued to pursue a Master’s degree in Law and Finance at the Queen Mary University of London, and the ACCA Qualification at BPP University. Once an active member of the UK Labour Party during university days, he has great passion in business and economics, and has strong sociopolitical concerns.
John considers himself a pragmatist. Though raised in a deeply conservative society, he occasionally finds himself inclined towards the centre-left views. He holds strong political convictions towards tackling social conflict and improving social justice through active government support and provision of fair economic opportunities—without undermining private initiatives, and personal and family responsibilities.
A passionate reader of the world news, history, politics, business and economics; he is particularly keen on observing the UK and Malaysian politics. He has a distaste for political corruption, and forgotten and twisted historical events, e.g., the state rights and autonomy of Sabah and Sarawak within the Malaysian Federation, which he believes they can only be resolved if the voice of concern triumphs.
As one may have expected, John’s greatest inspirations are influentials in spy fiction, politics and business. They include Ian Fleming, John le Carré, Lee Kuan Yew, Tony Blair, Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Guan Eng, Robert Kuok, and of course, his good ol’ dad and granddad. The most important values to him are sincerity, confidence, righteousness and fearlessness.
In his wildest dreams, John thought of joining the Royal Navy to become a naval commander himself like James Bond, standing for election as an MP and subsequently holding a ministerial position in government, and masterminding a peaceful reunification of Singapore with Malaysia in the distant future.
Thanks for stopping by and have a nice day. 😉
